Past tenses

When we tell stories in English, we often weave these tenses together to create a sense of “depth.” By using different past tenses, you tell the listener which events are the main focus and which ones provide background context.

  • Past Simple: The “backbone” of the story (the main events).
  • Past Continuous: The “atmosphere” (ongoing background actions).
  • Past Perfect: The “backstory” (events that happened even earlier).
